How to Build a Crypto Portfolio as an Australian Investor — A Practical Framework

What a sensible crypto portfolio allocation looks like for Australians in 2026 — asset selection, position sizing, rebalancing and the questions to ask before you start.

A crypto portfolio isn't just a collection of coins you've bought. A portfolio is a deliberate set of positions with defined rationale, allocation limits, and a plan for what you'll do when prices move. This is general information only, not financial advice.

Start with the most important question: what role does crypto play?

Crypto means different things in different portfolios. It can be a speculative high-upside position, a technological bet on blockchain infrastructure, a store-of-value allocation alongside gold, or an income-generating position through staking. Each rationale implies different assets and a different time horizon. Decide what crypto is doing in your portfolio before picking coins.

The core-satellite approach

The most practical framework for Australian retail crypto investors: Core (50–70% of crypto allocation): Bitcoin and/or Ethereum — the assets with the longest track record, deepest liquidity, clearest ATO treatment, and strongest institutional adoption in Australia. Satellite (30–50%): Deliberate positions in other assets with a specific, articulable thesis — not "I heard it's going to moon."

Position sizing

Don't allocate more to crypto than you could watch fall 70% without it changing your financial life. Bitcoin has experienced multiple 70%+ drawdowns from peak to trough. Most financial planners suggest 2–10% of total investable assets for most retail investors. Above 10% makes overall portfolio return highly dependent on crypto market cycles.

Rebalancing

Crypto allocations drift significantly during bull markets. A 5% starting allocation can become 15% after a strong year. Establishing a rebalancing rule — "when crypto exceeds X% of my total portfolio, I sell enough to bring it back to X%" — enforces sell discipline during euphoria, the hardest time psychologically to do it.

What to avoid

  • Over-diversification: owning 40 tokens is not a portfolio, it's chaos with extra tax events
  • Correlation blindness: most altcoins are highly correlated with Bitcoin — "diversifying" across 10 altcoins gives much less diversification than it appears
  • Chasing narrative: the asset everyone is talking about has usually already priced in most of the optimism
  • Leverage: most retail investors have no business using leverage in crypto
